DVD Review and Giveaway~Pirate's Code: The Adventures of Mickey Matson

My youngest son (12) and I recently had the opportunity to watch and review a new DVD release, Pirate's Code: The Adventures of Mickey Matson.

About the movie:
Releases on DVD June 2, 2015
91 Minutes // Genre: Adventure // Rating:  NR
In this follow up to Mickey Matson and the Copperhead Treasure, Mickey Matson is at it again; this time pitted against the evil Admiral Ironsides and his gang of pirates who are intent on destroying civilization.  Their new invention, the Tesla Coil, is a weapon of mass destruction that will send an electromagnetic pulse throughout the world, destroying every electronic device in existence.  With the help of a secret organization, Mickey and his best friend Sully embark on a mission to stop the pirates from taking over a submarine and stealing the last part needed to complete their devastating weapon.  If Admiral Ironsides succeeds in his plan, civilization will be sent back to the Stone Age.  It's a race against time, and the fate of the world hangs in the balance.

What we Thought: Having not watched the first movie, I wondered if we would feel lost.  We didn't-they did a good job of blending in a review of what happened in the first movie.  We both enjoyed Pirate's Code, and of course my son liked all the pirate stuff!  I felt like this movie could be watched by itself, but my son kept saying he would have liked it more had he watched the first movie, Mickey Matson and the Copperhead TreasurePirate's Code is a good family movie for all ages.

With Dove.org, you know you are watching a movie that has been approved for all ages of the family, which is awesome!  We've spent lots of time pre-watching movies to make sure they are appropriate for the kids.  Dove.org does it for you!

I have a wonderful movie to tell you about, and you have an opportunity to win your own copy of the DVD!

About the Movie: Based on the true story that successfully passed Susie’s Law in North Carolina, which seeks stricter punishment for animal abusers, Susie’s Hope brings to life the inspirational relationship between pit bull attack survivor Donna Lawrence and Susie, a pit bull-mix puppy found beaten, burned and left for dead. Recognizing reflect and abuse were to blame for the tragic attack that nearly claimed her life 10 months earlier, Donna resumes the battered animal and accepts her as family. Together, they learn to heal, love and forgive as they lead a historic effort to seek justice and protection, not only for Susie, but all animals. Starring Emmanuelle Vaguer (40 Days and 40 Nights), Burgess Jenkins (Remember The Titans) and Andrea Powell (Ender’s Game, The Twilight: Breaking Dawn Saga: Part 2), Susie’s Hope is an incredible story of love, loss and redemption.

Movie Review and Giveaway~This Is Our Time DVD

This Is Our Time is a new DVD by Pure Flix that releases tomorrow, April 16.  I had the opportunity to watch this movie with my husband and 18-year-old daughter last Saturday.

About the Movie: This is our Time begins with the college graduation of five close Christian friends, who all want to make a difference in the world. They are all seeking out their purposes in life, and some of the friends have clearer ideas of their paths.  Unfortunately, tragedy strikes the close-knit group,  and their friendship and their faith are tested in ways they never imagined.  “The experiences the characters in THIS IS OUR TIME face are the kinds of real-life ups and downs, successes and devastation, all of us encounter in living life,” said Lisa Arnold, the film’s writer, director and co-producer. “I wanted to tell a story that would resonate with young people just stepping out into the world to make their mark that would help them see that no matter the circumstances they face, God is always with them, loving them, guiding them.”
"What they all come to learn is that it never really was their time,” Arnold said. “It always was, always is, God’s time.”

THIS IS OUR TIME has received The Dove Foundation’s Family Seal of Approval (earning the highest rating of five Doves) and is recommended for all ages. It also features appearances by Hollywood veterans Eric Roberts, Erik Estrada and Dawn Wells.

It will be available nationwide at Family Christian Stores and most Christian online and brick-and-mortar retail stores nationwide.

Coinciding with the movie’s DVD release, Pure Flix is teaming with Family Christian Stores and other Christian retailers to award eight $2,500 college scholarships through registrations submitted through FamilyChristian.com and other websites representing more than 2,000 retail outlets nationwide. Participation eligibility and rules can be found at www.thisisourtimemovie.com.
What I (We) Thought:
Great movie! The characters were all easy to quickly connect with, and the storyline kept our attention the entire time.  We all enjoyed the movie, and will probably watch it again.  I am glad I didn't have my ten-year-old watch it with us, because it would have been too over his head and not relevant to his time in life. I will have him watch it in several years, though!   This was a great movie to watch with our daughter who is just about to graduate High School.  Right now, she is getting so much information from many sources and feels pressure to choose a major, to choose her future path now.  The movie stresses God's time, not our time, and that is a lesson I feel we all need to be reminded of continually throughout our lives.  It can be so easy to get caught up in our plans, our desires, our problems-but only God's plan matters.

Movie Review and Giveaway~Abel's Field

About Abel's Field
"Left motherless by tragedy and abandoned by his father, high school senior Seth McArdle (Samuel Davis) faces enormous pressure as he strives to support his little sisters. At school, he endures the daily bullying of the football team. But fighting back only finds him singled out for punishment and assigned to an after-school work detail under the supervision of the reserved groundskeeper, Abel (SOUL SURFER’S Kevin Sorbo). Much to his surprise, Seth discovers that Abel may be the only one who truly understands his struggles. As dark times lure Seth toward desperate measures, the reluctant Abel may be the one person who can point him back toward the light."

Abel's Field was released on January 22, 2013 by AFFIRM Films/Provident Films

What I Thought
I watched Abel's Field with my son Chad, who is 10 years old.  In the first few moments of the movie, he said, "If I think this is boring, can I leave the room?".  I told him he didn't have to watch it with me if he thought it was boring, but to just give it a few minutes first before deciding.  Well, he stayed for the entire movie!  We both really enjoyed it-one of those heartfelt movies that has tough life situations in it, along with a message.  Abel's Field is definitely a movie to watch with the entire family!  Here's your chance to win a copy:

Movie Premiere!

Monday evening, Alyssa and I did something we haven't done before-went to a movie premier!  Jodi from http://www.myslcmommy.com/ had a giveaway last week, and 5 readers each got to bring a guest to see the premiere of What to Expect When You're Expecting, due to open Friday!!  The picture above is Jodi and her winners, with us all modeling our Centrum maternity shirts (the giveaway was sponsored by Centrum).

The premier was unlike a regular movie-going experience, with a photographer snapping pictures, security taking our cell phones away during the movie and using the wand to check for recording devices, etc.   Inside the theater we each got a little gift bag with prenatal vitamins.  I think we will donate ours to the local Pregnancy Resource Center

The movie was good!!  There were so many great actors I didn't even know were going to be in it!  They covered every possible angle of having a child-from adoption to twins to different pregnancies, etc.  A fun movie!  Here is a picture of Alyssa and I showing off our shirts to the photographer:

Be sure to go to Jodi's website, http://www.myslcmommy.com/ for all sorts of good stuff-deals, giveaways, and more.  Also, check out her review of our movie night!
