DVD Review and Giveaway~Pirate's Code: The Adventures of Mickey Matson

My youngest son (12) and I recently had the opportunity to watch and review a new DVD release, Pirate's Code: The Adventures of Mickey Matson.

About the movie:
Releases on DVD June 2, 2015
91 Minutes // Genre: Adventure // Rating:  NR
In this follow up to Mickey Matson and the Copperhead Treasure, Mickey Matson is at it again; this time pitted against the evil Admiral Ironsides and his gang of pirates who are intent on destroying civilization.  Their new invention, the Tesla Coil, is a weapon of mass destruction that will send an electromagnetic pulse throughout the world, destroying every electronic device in existence.  With the help of a secret organization, Mickey and his best friend Sully embark on a mission to stop the pirates from taking over a submarine and stealing the last part needed to complete their devastating weapon.  If Admiral Ironsides succeeds in his plan, civilization will be sent back to the Stone Age.  It's a race against time, and the fate of the world hangs in the balance.

What we Thought: Having not watched the first movie, I wondered if we would feel lost.  We didn't-they did a good job of blending in a review of what happened in the first movie.  We both enjoyed Pirate's Code, and of course my son liked all the pirate stuff!  I felt like this movie could be watched by itself, but my son kept saying he would have liked it more had he watched the first movie, Mickey Matson and the Copperhead TreasurePirate's Code is a good family movie for all ages.

With Dove.org, you know you are watching a movie that has been approved for all ages of the family, which is awesome!  We've spent lots of time pre-watching movies to make sure they are appropriate for the kids.  Dove.org does it for you!

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Family Discussion Guide Review and Prize Pack Giveaway!!

Are you planning on taking the family to see The Amazing Spider-Man 2 when it comes out on May 2?   We are Spider-Man fans at our house.  I like whenever we can help our kids draw things out of popular movies that will help them in their lives.

We've always known that Spider-Man's most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2™, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

My family had the opportunity to review the Amazing Spider-Man 2 Family Discussion Guide.  It was great-I would love if every movie that came out had something like this.  In the Discussion Guide, there are six topics, each with questions to discuss.  The topics are:
*The Nature of Power
*You are Somebody Who is Needed
*Time is Luck and Life is Precious
*Live Your Own Life and Make it Count
*Choices and Destiny
*Sacrifice
The topics and questions are appropriate for adults and children, and are from a Christian perspective, with Bible verses.  They really make you think, and talk about some deep things.  I don't think our kids would ever have thought they could learn so much about life from a superhero movie!

Movie Review and Giveaway~Abel's Field

About Abel's Field
"Left motherless by tragedy and abandoned by his father, high school senior Seth McArdle (Samuel Davis) faces enormous pressure as he strives to support his little sisters. At school, he endures the daily bullying of the football team. But fighting back only finds him singled out for punishment and assigned to an after-school work detail under the supervision of the reserved groundskeeper, Abel (SOUL SURFER’S Kevin Sorbo). Much to his surprise, Seth discovers that Abel may be the only one who truly understands his struggles. As dark times lure Seth toward desperate measures, the reluctant Abel may be the one person who can point him back toward the light."

Abel's Field was released on January 22, 2013 by AFFIRM Films/Provident Films

What I Thought
I watched Abel's Field with my son Chad, who is 10 years old.  In the first few moments of the movie, he said, "If I think this is boring, can I leave the room?".  I told him he didn't have to watch it with me if he thought it was boring, but to just give it a few minutes first before deciding.  Well, he stayed for the entire movie!  We both really enjoyed it-one of those heartfelt movies that has tough life situations in it, along with a message.  Abel's Field is definitely a movie to watch with the entire family!  Here's your chance to win a copy:

Review and giveaway~The 5 Money Personalities

I just finished reading The 5 Money Personalities, a new book being released this month by Scott and Bethany Palmer.  This isn't your typical book about budgeting and getting out of debt; this is a very unique book about your personal relationship with money, and how you and your spouse relate to money together.  It was fascinating-I learned a lot about myself!  The 5 Money Personalities is full of great resources too-definitely check out this great tool-Discovering your Money Personality.  You can go to The Money Couple website to find more resources and check out their other helpful books.

About The 5 Money Personalities

"The hidden key to a healthy relationship is not just managing money but understanding how the other approaches money.

Every couple argues about money. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been married for 40 years or dating for 4 months, money touches every decision you make as a couple—from the $5 cup of coffee to the $50,000 car. And when the two of you don’t see eye-to-eye on how much to spend or how much to save, that’s when arguments turn into ugly toxic fights that leave both persons feeling hurt and angry. It’s why money has become the #1 cause of divorce in the U.S. Obviously, something needs to change. The reason this crisis has not been addressed is because it has never been identified, defined, or given a name. Scott and Bethany Palmer, aka “The Money Couple,” have identified and defined this problem and offer concrete solutions to fix it.
Once you know your Money Personality, you can get to the root of money arguments and start really working together. You’ll discover what has an impact on your loved one’s money decisions, and you’ll learn how to talk about money in a way that’s actually fun! You’ll figure out how to put an end to money secrets and lies once and for all.
It’s not just about money management, and it’s definitely not just about overcoming debt. It is a whole new way of living that will change everything in your relationship. Tens of thousands have already been transformed. Are you ready?"

Review and Giveaway~"Hear Me" CD!

I have a great new album to tell you about!  "Hear Me" by Kyle Sherman is being released today, October 9th.  I really enjoyed this album's soulful style.  The lyrics were so full of meaning, my favorite being " The Greatest Tear". Click on the links below to learn more about this CD and artist!

About the Album:
Fort Worth-based singer-songwriter Kyle Sherman recently signed on as the flagship artist to brand new label RayLynn Records, an opportunity that presented itself during a time period when a record deal wasn't even on his radar.

"It's crazy how God works," Kyle says. 'Five years ago, I pushed pretty hard to do my own thing as a singer-songwriter, but every well I approached would dry up. It clearly wasn't the right time." So Kyle continued on a path of leading worship, taking a full-time role as worship leader at Lifechurch.TV's Fort Worth campus under the leadership of renowned pastor/author Craig Groeschel.

Just 3-years later Kyle made it back to Nashville, pouring his heart into a microphone at Sony studio with veteran producer and country singer-songwriter Mark Collie making his first album. God is faithful. Hear Me, the result of those sessions, is an eclectic and authentic mix of rootsy, southern soul.

Book Review and Giveaway! The Forgiven Duke

The Forgiven Duke is the second book in The Forgotten Castle Series by Jamie Carie. It is due to be released to the public in July 2012, but I had the chance to review and advanced copy, and now you can win a copy yourself!

About the Book:

Tethered by her impulsive promise to marry Lord John Lemon - the path of least resistance - Alexandria Featherstone sets off toward Iceland in search of her parents with a leaden heart. A glimpse of her guardian, the Duke of St. Easton - the path less traveled by - on Dublin’s shore still haunts her.

Will he come after her? Will he drag her back to London, quelling her mission to rescue her treasure-seeking parents, or might he decide to throw caution to the wind and choose Foy Pour Devoir: “Faith for Duty,” the St. Easton motto. The Featherstone motto Valens et Volens: “Willing and Able,” beats in her heart and thrums through her veins. She will find her parents and find their love, no matter the cost.

The powerful yet wing-clipped Duke of St. Easton has never known the challenge that has become his life since hearing his ward’s name. Alexandria Featherstone will be the life or the death of him. Only time and God’s plan will reveal just how much this man can endure for the prize of love.

Review and Giveaway! The Woodcarver DVD

My family enjoys watching movies together at home.  Our youngest is 9 years old now, and is just beginning to enjoy some of the same movies we do.  The Woodcarver, with John Ratzeberger, was a great movie for our entire family to watch together. About the movie, which was just released on March 13 by Faith and Family Films:

"Matthew Stevenson is a troubled kid from a broken home. When he vandalizes the local church to get back at his parents, Matthew has to repair the damage to the church to avoid criminal charges. While working at the church, he meets Ernest (John Ratzenberger), an accomplished wood carver who created the intricate woodwork decoration that Matthew destroyed. Ernest has become something of a hermit, but reluctantly comes out of reclusion to help repair the church. Now Ernest and Matthew must work together to preserve the church's beautiful antiquity, and along the way, they also manage to restore their faith in God and in life."

The Woodcarver has great messages in the storyline that are important for us all to reflect on, such as God not always answering our prayers in the way we want or expect.  The actors did a wonderful job portraying the characters, and the movie sparked some good conversation among us.  This will definitely be a movie we watch again!   If you are interested in buying The Woodcarver, you can purchase it at Christian Cinema for only $10.92.

Now, for the GIVEAWAY!!!  *look at the end of this post for another way to win*

Book Review and Giveaway: Cooper and Me and the Military!

A few months ago, I reviewed 'Cooper and Me and the Winter Adventure'.  Chad and I really enjoyed the fun characters in it.  Now, another Cooper and Me book is here!!  It is called 'Cooper and Me and the Military'.

In this story, you will learn about Cooper's best friend, Trooper, and how he was adopted by a military family.  Also discussed in 'Cooper and Me and the Military' is how the kids in the family feel when their parents are gone serving our country, and the things they can do to stay close.

At the end of the book are a Life Lesson to go over with your child, Connections,  and Learning Together (questions about the book and the feelings your child might have).  Special in this book is 'My Letter', a fill-in-the-blank letter for your child to write, with an email address to send to the troops overseas!  Chad is really excited about sending his letter!!

Reading 'Cooper and Me and the Military' began a great discussion at our house.  My husband Jeff was in the Navy in the early years of our marriage, during the Persian Gulf War, until our oldest child was 1 1/2 years old.  We don't really talk about his time in the military very much, except the occasional mention of a country he has been to.  I realized our youngest, Chad, had no idea what his Dad did to serve our country.  We had a great conversation, and Chad enjoyed learning about his Dad's service.

Review and Giveaway~'A Mile in His Shoes' DVD

Sometimes it can be difficult to find movies the entire family can enjoy together, especially when you have younger kids who get bored easily.  It needs to be a movie that has enough of a plot/story line for the adults, but easy enough to understand for the kids.  Having a teen and a 20-year-old as well, that throws in yet another viewing group to satisfy at our house!

'A Mile in His Shoes' was perfect for our family to watch together.  It is from the director of 'Angels in the Outfield' and stars Dean Cain and Luke Shroder, who both did an excellent job portraying their characters.  Mickey is an 18-year-old boy with Asperger's Syndrome, a mild form of Autism. He also has an amazing pitching arm! He lives secluded on a farm with his parents, and is discovered by a minor league baseball coach. A Mile in His Shoes is an inspiring and educational story, based on a true story and book, 'The Legend of Mickey Tussler'. Watching this movie together started a dialogue on how to treat others who might be different-great family conversation!

Book Review and GIVEAWAY!!! Cooper and Me and the Winter Adventure!

We love reading fun winter stories during this time of year, and if the books have animals they are usually a favorite!  Chad and I received Cooper and Me and the Winter Adventure, written by Monique and Alexa Peters.  I had heard of the Cooper and Me series, but this is the first time we have read one of the books.  From the Cooper and Me website: "Explore life along with Cooper, a fun-loving black Labrador Retriever, whose entertaining adventures help kids navigate the emotions and challenges of everyday living. Created by mother-daughter team Monique and Alexa Peters and inspired by their real-life family dog, Cooper and Me provides adults and children with opportunities for meaningful conversation and tools for constructive problem-solving. Kids will laugh at Cooper’s antics, and adults will appreciate the resilience nurtured in their children."

I love it when a story can be fun and entertaining, and have a good message come through as well.  The illustrations are very charming, the characters are fun, and we have enjoyed this book several times since we received it.  I encourage you to go to the website,  http://www.cooperandme.com/ where you can find their mission statement, activities, buy books, and more!

Review and Giveaway!!!!~FFH Album 'One Silent Night'

I have a new favorite Christmas album!!  It's FFH's One Silent Night and it is fantastic!  I love Christmas music, and can't wait to unpack our Christmas CDs when we get out our decorations from storage.  We usually don't decorate until Thanksgiving weekend, so I was thrilled to get some new holiday music early! I love all the songs on this album too!

Press Release for FFH:
(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) Sept. 30, 2011– Best-selling pop group FFH will usher in the holiday season with its first Christmas album. One Silent Night, available Oct. 18, is a mix of original songs and Christmas classics.
Produced by FFH founding member Jeromy Deibler, One Silent Night has been four years in the making. Giving in to the persistent appeals of loyal fans, FFH has crafted a project worthy of your holiday music collection.

Listeners will recognize favorites like “Winter Wonderland,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” and “Jingle Bell Rock,” among others, while being introduced to new tracks including “The Birthday of a King,” “Glorious Impossible,” and “One Silent Night.”

Deibler comments, “We just feel blessed to be able to make this record and wanted to do the kind of Christmas music we like to listen to, something that’s not trendy but more of a classic style. For us Christmas is about remembering… slowing down to see what is important. And being reminded of the glorious impossible that was the birth of Christ. We hope this album reflects that desire and inspires others to do the same.”

FFH plans to support the album with singles “One Silent Night” and “Baby It’s Cold Outside” to radio Oct. 1 as well as select tour dates in November and December.

About FFH:

Pop vocal group FFH has released thirteen projects, sold more than two million albums, and garnered 24 radio hits, including seven No. 1 singles and ten Top 5 radio singles. Book Review and Giveaway~The Grace Effect by Larry Taunton!

I just finished reading a great book-The Grace Effect. I was expecting an educational book about atheism and Socialism from a Christian standpoint. I got that, and much more!  There was a very personal story here involving the author's adoption of a young girl in the Ukraine. Being adopted myself and having adopted Chad, I am always interested in books that have an adoption story in them.  The Grace Effect is educational, heartwarming, and heartbreaking.  It was hard to put down!

About The Grace Effect:

"Simply defined, the ‘grace effect’ is an observable phenomenon—that life is demonstrably better where authentic Christianity flourishes.” What does Christianity give us beyond televangelists, potlucks, and bad basketball leagues? Not much, according to the secular Left. The world, they say, would be a better place without it.

Historian and Christian apologist Larry Taunton has spent much of his career refuting just this sort of thinking, but when he encounters Sasha, a golden-haired orphan girl whose life has been shaped by atheistic theorists, he discovers an unlikely champion for the transforming power of grace. Through the narrative of Sasha’s redemption, we see the false promises of socialism; the soul-destroying influence of unbelief; and how a society cultivates its own demise when it rejects the ultimate source of grace. We see, in short, the kind of world the atheists would give us: a world without Christianity—cold, pitiless, and graceless.

And yet, as Sasha shows us, it is a world that is not beyond the healing power of “the grace effect.” Occasionally infuriating, often amusing, but always inspiring, The Grace Effect will have you cheering for the courageous little girl who shamed the academic elitists of our day."
