Product Review~Ozeri WeightMaster II Digital Bathroom Scale

At  my house, a few of us are working on dropping some extra pounds, so I was very excited to be able to review the Ozeri WeightMaster II 440 lbs Digital Bathroom BMI Scale .  This scale has got so many great features!

Each time you get on, the scale displays your weight, BMI, and weight change since your last weigh-in! It tracks your weight with a 30 day memory for up to 8 unique users.  The color changes to red if you've gained weight, and green if you've lost weight.  This has been super helpful and easy for us to keep track of how we are doing in our weight-loss efforts.

The Ozeri WeightMaster II will weigh up to 440 pounds, and automatically calibrates with StepOn technology and auto-powers off.   It is treated with Microban® antimicrobial product protection that disrupts the growth of stain and odor-causing bacteria and helps maintain surface cleanliness.  I appreciate that, especially in the bathroom.  The exterior is a slip-resistant grooved ABS exterior reinforced with a tempered glass interior, and non-slip scratch-resistant feet that won't damage flooring.  It looks nice and sleek in my bathroom, and my pretty beige floor tile shows through the glass in the center.

I'm sure we will continue to get lots of use of the Ozeri WeightMaster II.  It comes with a full warranty, so if there are ever any problems, we are covered.  To purchase your own Ozeri WeightMaster II 440 lbs Digital Bathroom Scale on Amazon, click here.  Let me know what you think!

ABOUT THE BOOK

New from bestselling authors Mindy Starns Clark and Susan Meissner, The Amish Groom (Book 1 in The Men of Lancaster County series) explores the men of an Amish community in Lancaster County, how their Amish beliefs play out in their unique roles, and the women who change their lives.

Born to an ex-Amish mother and an Englisch father, 23-year-old Tyler Anderson was raised as a military kid until the age of 6, when his mom passed away. His dad, shipping off to yet another overseas post, placed Tyler in the care of his Amish grandparents, an arrangement that was supposed to be temporary. It lasted a lifetime.

Rachel Hoeck is the young woman waiting for Tyler’s proposal. She senses that though he loves her and wishes to make a commitment to her and his Amish beliefs, part of him still wonders whether an Amish lifestyle is truly for him. When an opportunity to connect with his father unexpectedly arises, a visit to California causes Tyler to question everything, including a future with Rachel. Will the new girl in his life, Lark, cause him to remain in the Englisch world? Or will he choose to be an Amish groom after all?

A poignant novel of hoping for romance and searching for identity, set in a beloved Amish community.

If you would like to read the first chapter of The Amish Groom, go HERE.

My Thoughts: The Amish Groom was an interesting twist on Amish romance.  Since Tyler spent his first six years in the English world before being left with his Amish grandparents, he has a different perspective than his Amish friends and family.  Now as an adult, he feels something is missing, and wonders if it is his English heritage.  The story was exciting as Tyler travels to California to care for his half-brother, and is immersed in the English world.  I enjoyed The Amish Groom and look forward to more books in the Men of Lancaster County Series.  It's nice to have a series focusing on the men this time!

Book Review~A Promise in Pieces

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
A Promise in Pieces
Abingdon Press (April 15, 2014)
by
Emily T. Wierenga

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

A Word from the Author:

I’m Emily, and I’m honored and humbled to meet you, friend. We’re all stumbling along on this journey and you can approach me about anything okay? I’m an open book, with dog-eared pages and a worn cover.

I’m mama to two boys, ages two and four, and married to a farm-boy-turned-math-teacher. We live in a small Dutch hamlet with three churches, one Co-Op and no stop lights. There are a lot of fields out here, there’s a lot of space and sky for breathing and running and writing.

We foster two boys in addition to our own two, and before I had kids, I took care of my Mum who had brain cancer. She fought back and has recovered, all glory to God, and my pastor-father still holds her hand while they go for daily walks.

I battled anorexia nervosa as a child, and then again as a newly married woman, and I write a lot about body image now and have a passion for women to learn to love themselves.

My husband and I have battled infertility and are currently trying to adopt our third child through the local Alberta government.

I hurt for the church, and believe in it, and pray for it, as I’ve grown up inside its walls and have heard its groanings.

I have a heart for Africa, particularly Uganda, and went there in January on a bloggers’ trip with World Help.

My favorite things to do are read literary novels, play guitar, snowboard, paint with oil and acrylics and hug my babies.

I am the author of two books on eating disorders, a novel releasing this spring, and a memoir coming out this summer.

I hope you’ll connect with me on FB: https://www.facebook.com/emilytwierenga, or if you prefer, Twitter: @emily_wierenga. I’d love to have a virtual glass of wine, or cup of coffee, with you.

Peace to you friends,

e.

ABOUT THE BOOK

After the end of World War II, Clara Kirkpatrick returns from the Women’s Army Corp to deliver a dying soldier’s last wishes: convey his love to his young widow, Mattie, with apologies for the missed life they had planned to share.

Struggling with her own post-war trauma, Clara thinks she’s not prepared to handle the grief of this broken family. Yet upon meeting Mattie, and receiving a baby quilt that will never cuddle the soldier’s baby, Clara vows to honor the sacrifices that family made.

Now a labor and delivery nurse in her rural hometown, Clara wraps each new babe in the gifted quilt and later stitches the child’s name into the cloth. As each new child is welcomed by the quilt, Clara begins to wonder whatever happened to Mattie—and if her own life would ever experience the love of a newborn. Little does she know that she will have the opportunity to re-gift the special quilt—years later and carrying even greater significance than when it was first bestowed.

If you would like to read the first chapter of A Promise in Pieces, go HERE.

My Thoughts: I loved this story!  I'm very interested in midwifery, and so I enjoyed reading about Clara's experiences.  The entire story, from beginning to end, follows Clara's personal struggles, while the world around her is struggling through the war and its aftermath.  The quilt that Mattie gives her, and it's story as time goes on, is very sweet and emotional.  I read A Promise in Pieces very quickly, as I had a hard time putting it down!

Book Review~An Amish Garden

An Amish Garden is a collection of four Novellas written by four of my favorite authors.  The stories all have the garden as a central theme, and each is approximately 100 pages, perfect for a weekend read.  All four were delightful to read!

Rooted in Love, by Beth Wiseman, tells the story of Rosemary and Saul.  Rosemary has her hands full since her mother died.  With a houseful of boys and her father to tend to, she doesn't have time for much else, including gardening.  Saul wants a life with Rosemary, but she won't go out with him.  He tries to win her heart while helping plant a garden for her family.

Flowers for Rachael was written by Kathleen Fuller.  Rachael lives with her grandfather, caring for him and his home since he had a stroke.  Being just the two of them, she is lonely.  She fills her time caring for her garden, which she loves doing.  She has strong feelings for their neighbor Gideon, but doesn't think he feels the same about her.  Soon, a secret admirerer begins leaving her beautiful flowers.  Could it be Gideon?

Seeds of Love is by Tricia Goyer, and is set in a small Amish community in Montana.  Sadie Chupp moved there after the death of her parents.  The only thing left of her parents are some heirloom tomato seeds they left her, and she is excited to plant them and watch them grow.  Eli Plank is a bachelor who is in Montana for a short time.  He begins to have feelings for Sadie, and helps her with her seeds.  She has feelings for him as well, but a misunderstanding threatens to ruin everything.

Where Healing Blooms, by Vannetta Chapman, is the story of recently widowed Emma, who lives with her Mother-in-Law.  She finds a teenage boy living in her barn, and agrees to let him stay and help around the house.  Soon the Bishop asks her to let an abused woman and her children stay temporarily as well.  Her Mother-in-Law reveals a secret hidden in the garden that might change all of their lives.

Also included in An Amish Garden are glossaries of Amish words, Reading Group Guides, and Amish Recipes.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Family Discussion Guide Review and Prize Pack Giveaway!!

Are you planning on taking the family to see The Amazing Spider-Man 2 when it comes out on May 2?   We are Spider-Man fans at our house.  I like whenever we can help our kids draw things out of popular movies that will help them in their lives.

We've always known that Spider-Man's most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2™, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

My family had the opportunity to review the Amazing Spider-Man 2 Family Discussion Guide.  It was great-I would love if every movie that came out had something like this.  In the Discussion Guide, there are six topics, each with questions to discuss.  The topics are:
*The Nature of Power
*You are Somebody Who is Needed
*Time is Luck and Life is Precious
*Live Your Own Life and Make it Count
*Choices and Destiny
*Sacrifice
The topics and questions are appropriate for adults and children, and are from a Christian perspective, with Bible verses.  They really make you think, and talk about some deep things.  I don't think our kids would ever have thought they could learn so much about life from a superhero movie!

Product Review~Carol's Daughter Hair Milk

I'm part of the Influenster program, and recently they sent me a free bottle of Carol's Daughter Hair Milk Cleansing Conditioner as part of their #FindItAtTarget campaign.  Before this, I had never heard of this brand or product.

Carol's Daughter Hair Milk is a nourishing and conditioning product with Agave, Shea, and Provitamin B5.  It deeply moisturizes, improves softness, and prevents frizz.  Even better, there are no sulfates, no parabens, no petroleum, no mineral oil, and no artificial colors.

I love the fragrance of Carol's Daughter Hair Milk!  It also leaves my hair incredibly soft and does help with frizz.  If you'd like to find out more about this product, click here.

Book Review~Navigating the Explosion-You are Not Alone

When I was born, I went from the hospital to a foster home, and then was placed with my parents at two months old.  My older brother was also adopted, and I had several cousins who had been adopted.  So, adoption was a very normal thing in my life.  When I married, both my husband and I had hearts for helping children in need.  Over the years, we worked in a group home for troubled teens, I did home daycare, and my husband is now a social worker working with at-risk kids.

We began doing foster care about ten years ago, with the only intention of helping kids and giving them a safe, loving temporary home-NOT adopting.  Well, that went right out the window with our very first placement!  We adopted Chad when he was three years old.  Since then we've had other foster children, but no more adoptions.  Chad is no different to me than my other children-he's all mine, just as I always felt I was with my Mom.  He was meant to be with our family, as I was meant to be with my adoptive family.  God has his plans for our lives.

Was fostering and adopting easy?  No. There have been times of frustration, and times when you feel alone, that you feel nobody understands what you are going through.   Adoptive mother Allison Schumm has written a book that helps mothers through this incredible, but complicated, journey.

This is a picture of Allison's amazing, beautiful family. Wow!  In Navigating the Explosion-You are not Alone, Allison shares her story and thoughts, and shares several letters written by adoptive mothers.  The chapters in the book are:

*The Call
*The Wait
*The Honeymoon
*The Groove
*The Future
*The Others

The book is full of relevant information that will also touch your heart.  I felt so understood after I read it. Even if you aren't a foster or adoptive parent, this book would be a valuable read so that you can understand and support others.

To learn more about Navigating the Explosion-You are not Alone, including where to purchase, visit the author's website.  Here is Allison Schumm's contact information:

Book review & Author Giveaway~Dancing with Fireflies

Jade McKinley grew up in Chapel Springs, and has recently returned to her home town after years away.  She is keeping a secret-she is pregnant due to a date rape.  Back home, she has a lot of emotions from the past to deal with.  God seems far away.

Daniel Dawson is an honorary member of the McKinley family, and he has been in love with Jade for years. As Daniel and Jade begin spending more time together, Jade realizes she has feelings for Daniel as well.  The problem is, neither of them will let the other know how they feel.

Dancing with Fireflies is the latest in the Chapel Springs Romance series by author Denise Hunter. I really enjoyed this sweet romance.  My heart hurt for Jade, pregnant and feeling lost and alone.  The story was hard to put down, and I enjoyed Denise Hunter's style of writing.  There was a general theme throughout the book of being lost and finding your way home, and letting God be in control.

Children's Book Review~Whaley's Big Adventure

Whaley's Big Adventure is a new children's book written AND illustrated by 5-year-old Alexander Luke, and presented by his grandmother, award-winning author Carole P. Roman.  We've read and enjoyed many of Ms. Roman's books, and it looks like her grandson is now the newest author in the family!  How amazing to be able to say you published your first book at age five!!!

In Whaley's Big Adventure, Whaley the Blue Whale sets out on an adventure to meet and learn about several other types of whales.  It is a cute story, full of fascinating facts about the different whales.  The illustrations are simple child drawings, and the colors are calm and muted.  This would be a good children's book for a wide range of ages.

Book Review~Fearless

Jim and Amy Spencer are grieving the loss of a child during pregnancy, with no hope for children in the future.  In their small town of Virginia Mills, one of the residents is saved from a house fire by a young girl who mysteriously appeared in the fire.  Nobody knows who she is, and she doesn't know anything but her first name-Louisa.  She is placed with the Spencers, who soon start noticing odd things happening.

Louisa seems to have a special gift of healing, which stirs up their town.  At the same time, murders begin occurring, leaving the residents terrorized.  Do the two have anything in common?  What will happen to Louisa, and will the killer be stopped?

Fearless is a page-turning novel written by author Mike Dellosso.  This isn't my usual type of fiction, but the description intrigued me.  I'm glad I decided to review it, because I couldn't put it down once I started reading!  This book has you on the edge of your seat to the very last page!  It is a good, clean book with an overall theme of faith in God.

Disclosure: I received this book free from www.thebooketeria.com in exchange for my honest review.  All opinions are my own.
