Mallory Hammond has been determined to save a life since she was a child, when she watched her cousin die because she could not get a new kidney. She promised her cousin that she would save someone else. This promise has been driving her ever since. Mallory has a good life, which includes the man she has loved for several years, Tate. She doesn't want for money as she has a sizable trust fund, but she is restless to fulfill her promise.
Through her boss, Mallory meets a man in Pakistan online who has a daughter that is very sick with leukemia. The health care where they live, a dangerous part of the world, is very poor, so the man wants to bring his daughter to America for treatment. Despite her family and Tate's protests, Mallory goes to Pakistan to marry the man in name only, so that she can save his daughter's life. What she doesn't foresee is that she has gotten herself into a very dangerous situation that could end her life.
What I Thought: I've read books by Beth Wiseman before and loved them, but I must say The Promise is my new favorite. Based on a true story (a friend of the author's), this book had me reading the last 100 pages in one sitting. Talk about being on the edge of your seat!!! The Promise took me a while to get into, but once Mallory set her trip to Pakistan in motion I was hooked! The book really makes you stop and think about how horribly women are treated in other cultures. If you like suspense, The Promise is a definite must read!
